SharePoint
(TM)
Technologies

The SharePoint technologies from Microsoft provide groups
large and small with the ability to work together to plan
events and projects, share information, and collaborate on
documents across an intranet, extranet, or the Internet.
They offer features such as a Web-based interface, document
management in a group setting, search, e-mail notification
(subscription), threaded Web discussions, and a roles-based
security model. Currently, there are two SharePoint
technologies available:
- For ad hoc collaboration, such as a team coming
together to plan an event,
SharePoint Team Services provides a team Web
site that runs on Internet Information Services and SQL
Server.
- For creating a structured work environment that makes
it easy to find, share, and publish information,
SharePoint Portal Server
provides a portal solution that is built on top of the Web
Storage System and a digital dashboard framework.
