Suite Components

Multipurpose Operating System New version
Windows 2000 Server. A best-of-breed network operating system that provides file/print, Microsoft Internet Information Services, Microsoft Routing and Remote Access Service, shared application, and additional communications services—along with overall improvements in server performance and reliability.

  • Disk Quotas. Allows disk partitions to be set up in order to limit the amount of disk space used on the server for a particular user.

  • Index Service. Provides an easier way for users on the local area network (LAN) to find documents stored on the server. Users can query based on document properties, date information, or words and phrases stored within each document.

  • Improved Backup. Supports integrated scheduling of backups as well as support for additional backup media.

For networks with Windows 2000 Professional clients, the following additional features are also introduced:

  • Microsoft IntelliMirror®. Supports synchronization of data and user-profile information on server-based folders to a local storage cache of Windows 2000 Professional client machines. Users can configure a folder and other profile settings located on the server to be made available offline. Changes to either the server copy or the local copy of data will be automatically synchronized during the next connection to the network.

  • Group Policy Objects (GPOs). Enables an easier way to deploy software to Windows 2000 Professional client machines. GPOs also offer the ability to support roaming profiles, allowing users to log on to any Windows 2000 Professional client machine on the network and gain access to all of their user settings and server-based data folders, while also providing the ability to lock-down desktop and Start menu settings for a given group of users.

  • Application Assign and Publish. Allows administrators to set up applications to be published in the Add/Remove Programs library for all Windows 2000–based clients on the network.

Messaging and Collaboration New
Exchange 2000 Server, with Outlook 2000 Clients. A reliable messaging and collaboration server providing a rich set of features for users on the network, including mobile or remote users. Features include e-mail, shared calendaring, task management, shared contacts, instant messaging, Microsoft NetMeeting® conferencing functionality, and broad Internet standards support.

  • Improved Outlook Web Access (OWA) Web Client. Enables users to view their own e-mail Inbox, calendars, contacts, and tasks, as well as Exchange Public Folders through the new Exchange Web client. Users can connect from any computer on the network, or over an Internet-based virtual private network (VPN) with a Web browser, to retrieve their Exchange-based information without any special user configuration on the computer.

  • Instant Messaging Service. Lets users instantly set up a chat session with local or Internet users without having to pay local or long distance phone fees, utilizing the shared connection to the Internet.

  • Group Scheduling. Allows users to organize meetings quickly and efficiently over the Internet so they no longer need to have a meeting to schedule a meeting.

Shared Internet Access, Internet Web Cache, and Firewall New version
Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000.
Successor to Microsoft Proxy Server, an Internet firewall and Web cache server that provides rock-solid Internet security while allowing you to manage individualized Web-access policies, and to increase your speed of retrieval for frequently used Internet Web pages.
  • New VPN Wizard. Allows a business to easily configure a secure VPN to allow mobile workers to connect to the Small Business Server network over the Internet without having to dial directly into the server. VPNs can save companies from additional telephony costs by providing a way for workers outside of the telephone area code to dial in to their local Internet connection, and to use the Internet to perform the long-distance connection—at virtually no cost to the remote user.

  • Managed Access. Helps prevent unauthorized employee Internet usage by allowing IT administrators to set and manage individual Web-access policies, as appropriate, on an employee-by-employee basis.

Database New version
Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000. A relational database management system (RDBMS) and engine on top of which to run and/or build line-of-business software solutions. The new version offers delivers improved performance, reliability, and availability.

Shared Fax Service Updated
Shared Fax Service. This newly re-architected feature allows users to send faxes from their desktop through a multiple, shared fax modem or interface. Administrators can configure fax-calling times, priorities, and manage the fax queue.

  • Support for Brooktrout Fax Boards and Additional ISDN Cards. Offers support for all Windows 2000–based, Class 1 Fax modems, as well as introducing support for Brooktrout fax boards and AVT ISDN cards.

  • Broadcast Fax Support. Spools documents from the client machine to the server all at one time, and delivers the image to the list fax numbers in the fax queue, without tying up the client machine or network traffic during the broadcast fax job.

Shared Modem Service Updated
Shared Modem Service. Allows the client machines to use modems shared on Small Business Server to connect to external information services.
  • Save Money on Hardware and Telephony. Allows businesses that regularly connect to information services to save money on hardware and telephony costs-by not requiring a modem on each client machine and dedicated phone lines for each computer.

  • Managed Usage. Allows for restricted use of the shared modems for individual users or groups of users, providing control over who connects to external networks.

Web Site Creation and Management New version
Microsoft FrontPage® 2000. This Web-authoring tool makes it easy for both novice and experienced Web users to create great-looking Web content without requiring programming experience.
  • Ease of Use. Provides wizards and templates so that users can quickly build, update, and manage their Internet and intranet Web sites.

  • Professional-Looking Designs. Offers new editing tools and more than 60 customizable Web site designs.

Simplifying Deployment

Integrated Setup Updated
Small Business Server 2000 lets you install and configure the operating system, all application components, and service packs on the server machine—even down to the clients—through a single, integrated setup that includes disk space, system compatibility, and dependency checking. This significantly reduces the complexity of server setup by automatically defaulting many common parameters and consolidating the number of setup screens.

With Windows 2000–based, Plug and Play support, more hardware devices, including many USB devices, will be detected, installed, and configured by default. Small Business Server 2000 no longer requires a modem during setup. This provides you with a more reliable setup experience.

Add User Wizard Updated
Adding users to the network is quick and efficient with the updated three-screen wizard that creates a user account, an e-mail mailbox, a home directory, and sets security permissions based on customizable user account templates. This allows IT administrators to easily create tailored user templates that are based on individual business needs.

Client Setup (Setup Computer Wizard) Updated
Small Business Server 2000 helps you automate the job of connecting client computers to a Small Business Server network—setting up and configuring networking components, and deploying software applications, to your client workstations.

The updated Setup Computer Wizard includes an Extensibility Wizard tool that allows IT administrators to install applications that they designate to appear in the Setup Computer Wizard software list. This makes it easier to deploy virtually any application to Small Business Server–based client machines.

Internet Connection Wizard Updated
The Internet Connection Wizard walks through configuring your Small Business Server as the gateway server connecting your network to the Internet. The wizard configures Windows 2000 Server, Internet Protocol (IP), e-mail, and firewall settings. This tool now also integrates the Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes. This allows existing POP3 e-mail accounts to be used with Exchange 2000.

Suite Level Management Features

Customizable Management Consoles Updated
Customizable management consoles allow controlled access for individual users and for their role and level of technical expertise. This allows users to perform certain server administrations tasks, such as monitoring server health, or managing network users, computers, and devices.

  • Personal Console. A simplified console, designed for more technical users on the network that allows users to help monitor the status of the server, manage basic user permissions, add users, and manage printer and fax queues.

  • Administrator Console. An advanced console, designed for IT administrators who need full access to the server. Allows access to all tasks in the Personal Console, plus the ability to fully configure settings for Windows 2000, Exchange Server, SQL Server, and ISA Server.

  • Because the new consoles are based entirely on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that shipped in Windows 2000 Server, and the line of server products from Microsoft, IT administrators can leverage familiarity across server products and customize these consoles using native component snap-ins.

Windows Terminal Services–based Administration New
Allows the use of either an Internet connection through a Web client such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or through dedicated client software, to manage Small Business Server remotely using the Small Business Server Management Consoles. Gives administrators and users the same software functionality as if they were on the LAN or sitting in front of the server console.

Server Status Reports and Proactive System Monitoring Updated
Server Status Tool. Helps IT administrators to automatically receive regular "snapshots" of server status, including hardware condition, application health, and system performance. Technology providers can have these reports regularly e-mailed or faxed to them at designated times in Extensible Markup Language (XML) format. These reports can be kept on file for building historical views of server usage and planning for future upgrades or required maintenance.

New
Health Monitor 2.1. Lets IT administrators and/or power users view system performance metrics, set and modify thresholds to report server health, and configure server-based alerts. The alerts can then be configured to run actions such as logging the issue, running a command line, or sending an e-mail to a local or remote user. Technology providers can configure the alerts to send e-mail messages or faxes to their own e-mail accounts.

On-line Tours and Help with "Bayesian Troubleshooters" New
Keeping your systems up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is now even easier with comprehensive HTML online help for all application and suite components, including guided tours on deploying, managing, and using various application and suite services. New "Bayesian Troubleshooters" for Small Business Server 2000 help guide technology providers through administration rough spots by asking questions that analyze the system's condition, then providing possible steps to remedy or handle the situation.
